Songs and Dances of Love
Saturday, March 25, 2017, 7:30 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown
- Johannes Brahms — Liebeslieder Walzer (arr. for strings)
- Edward Elgar — Serenade
- Ney Rosauro — Marimba Concerto No. 1
Michelle Humphreys, marimba
March’s program explores widely contrasting works for string orchestra. Brahms’ sumptuous Liebeslieder Waltzes, originally for choir, come to life in this exquisite arrangement. Elgar’s early Serenade is a passionate and personal work of great lyricism. Brazilian Ney Rosauro’s concerto is sexy, dancelike, and lyrical. By turns virtuosic and sensual, this work is the most widely performed concerto for the marimba and one irresistible to both audiences and orchestras. Our soloist, Michelle Humphreys, is the newly appointed Professor of Percussion at Towson University, and the Timpanist and Principal Percussionist of Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra. An early music specialist, Michelle performs with The Folger Concert, Tempesta di Mare, Opera Lafayette, and many others. Learn more about her at: percussionpro.com
Two Rivers Piano and Wind Ensemble
Windswept!
Saturday April 29, 2017, 7:30 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown
- Paquito D’Rivera (b. 1948) — Invitación al Danzón for clarinet, horn and piano
- Friedrich W. Voigt (1833-1894) — Nocturne, Op. 75
- Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) — Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano (1926)
- Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) — Quintet, Op; 16 in E-flat Major
Yes, that’s right: we are wheeling a Steinway piano into Trinity Church!
Join Friends of Music for Windswept, a program featuring the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra wind players and Shepherd University’s Scott Beard on piano. The young upstart Beethoven’s brash and brilliant quintet for piano and woodwinds was shrewdly written as a companion piece to Mozart’s earlier work for the same instrumentation. Beethoven swaps out Mozart’s elegance and nuanced colors for angularity and boldness. The Poulenc Trio for piano, oboe, and bassoon is suave and charming. With a borrowed title from Carl von Weber, D’Rivera’s fun-loving Invitation to the Dance pulls from his jazz origins, while the Voigt Nocturne delves into the lyrical and melting. Windswept spirits you across a vast plain of sound and emotion.
