Sunday, May 21, 2023 3:00 pm
Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church,
Shepherdstown, WV
- Béla Bartok (1881–1945) — Romanian Folk Dances
Amanda Harberg (b. 1973) — Elegy
Jason Diggs, viola - Franz Danzi (1763–1826) — concertante in B flat major, Op. 41
Barbara Spicher, flute
David Drosinos, clarinet - Charles Gounod (1818–1893) — Symphony No. 1 in D major
This program moves from the gutsy, earthy sounds of Bartok’s authentic portrayal of the folk melodies and rhythms of Romania to the elegant sparkle of both Danzi’s Concertante and Gounod’s effervescent First Symphony. We also present a stunningly lyrical work by American composer Amanda Harberg. The program features three Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra principals as soloists!

HAPSBURG BY HAPPENSTANCE

Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church,

- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1756–1791) — PIano Concerto No. 12 in A major
Jed Gaylin, piano & conductor - Anton Webern (1883–1945) –– Langsamer Satz (“Slow Movement”)
- Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) — Symphony No. 44 in E minor, “Trauer”
The highlight of this concert is our maestro, Jed Gaylin, conducting from the keyboard as soloist in celebration of his 10 years with Friends of Music and Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra. A surprisingly lyrical work by 20th-century icon Anton Webern and one of Haydn’s most expressive “Strum und Drang” symphonies form a program of wild contrasts—all with a Viennese accent.
TWO RIVERS STRING QUARTET
LONGING FOR SONG
Sunday, September 25, 2022 at 3pm
Trinity Episcopal Church
200 W. German Street, Shepherdstown, WV
- Amy Beach (1867–1944) — String quartet, Op. 89
- Franz Schubert (1797–1828) — String quartet No. 14 in D minor (Death and the Maiden)
Both of these lyrical and impassioned quartets are based on song. A late quartet by Schubert, Death and the Maiden is celebrated as core quartet repertoire. It is known for both introspection and fire, and is based upon a song of his own with the same name. American composer Amy Beach uses three Inuit songs in a shorter work written in 1929. Although about a century and an ocean apart, these works share a similarly expressive sound palette.

HIGHLANDS AND LOW

- Carl August Nielsen (1865–1931) —Serenata in vano
- Franz Schubert (1797–1828) — Octet in F major
Schubert’s monumentally sumptuous octet is prefaced by a quirky work by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen. His Serenata is humorous, fresh, and urbane. Schubert’s work transports us to the heights, breadths, and colorful melodies of upper Austria. (This program was originally scheduled for our 2019–2020 season but cancelled because of the pandemic; we are glad to offer it again.)
