- Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) — Invito alla danza (Invitation to the dance): Monica Reinagel, mezzo soprano; Jed Gaylin, piano
- Respighi — Il Tramonto (The Sunset): Monica Reinagel, mezzo soprano; Heather Austin-Stone, violin; Teresa Gordon, violin; Jason Diggs, viola; Camilo Pérez-Mejía, cello
- Franz Schubert (1797–1828) — Die Forelle (“The Trout”), Op. 32, D. 550: Monica Reinagel, mezzo soprano; Jed Gaylin, piano
- Schubert — Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 114, D. 667 (“Trout”): Heather Austin-Stone, violin; Jason Diggs, viola; Camilo Pérez-Mejía, cello; Donovan Stokes, bass; Jed Gaylin, piano
Respighi’s setting for string quartet and mezzo of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s decadent poem The Sunset is utterly Schubertian (even perhaps like the work of Richard Strauss) in its otherworldly conjurings. In contrast, Schubert’s Trout is uncharacteristically light-hearted and worry-free. Jed joins us on the keyboard for this one, and we welcome back mezzo soprano Monica Reinagel.

TWO RIVERS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
MYSTERIES, MARVELS, AND MISCHIEF
7:30pm // Saturday, November 4, 2023
3pm // Sunday, November 5, 2023
Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church,

- Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745–1799) — Overture to L’Amant Anonyme (Symphony No. 2 in D major)
- Ciprian Porumbescu (1853–1883) — Balada for violin and orchestra; Irina Muresanu, violin
- Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) — Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28
- Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) — Symphony No. 4 in B major, Op. 60
Beethoven’s unjustifiably lesser-known Symphony No. 4 pits the sounds of mystery and the ineffable with good-natured romp. Romanian-born violin virtuoso Irina Muresanu joins us for folk/Romani-inspired music by her compatriot Ciprian Porumbescu in a work that will steal your heart. She also dazzles with similar inspiration in the hands of French composer Saint-Saëns. We open with the Caribbean (Guadeloupe) native Joseph Bologne’s similarly hued opera overture based on a 1781 play by Madame Stefanie Genlis.
